Meet the Board

The RESCU Board of Directors is a passionate and committed group of up to fifteen volunteers who represent diverse parts of our community. This team includes current and former crafters, entertainers, festival staff, and even patrons, all of whom dedicate their time and energy to attend meetings, serve on committees, and keep RESCU running smoothly.

These dedicated RESCU supporters not only volunteer their time but also demonstrate their commitment by achieving 100% participation in giving. Each Director is actively involved in fundraising efforts, helping to ensure that RESCU continues to thrive.

Their time is freely given.

Their dedication is admirable.

Phil Johnson

Founder/President Emeritus

Philip Earl Johnson is a co-founder of RESCU. He has served as president, and secretary in the past. He has worked at Renaissance faires for 44 years and has done his solo show MooNiE at festivals for the past 34 of them.

Magnolia Strange

President

Magnolia first encountered RESCU in 2015 at a morning meeting at the St. Louis Renaissance Festival and began volunteering in 2016 with the Fundraising and Programs Committees. They joined the Board of Directors in 2019, became Programs Chairperson in 2020, served as Vice President in 2023 under Danielle Dupont, and assumed the role of President of the Board in 2025.

Magnolia is deeply committed to RESCU’s multifaceted mission, seeing the organization as a powerful example of transforming tragedy into triumph. Living with multiple chronic illnesses/disorders, they are especially passionate about connecting members of this particular community with accessible health and medical resources.

As a full-time, traveling entertainer, Magnolia has firsthand experience with the barriers to healthcare faced by itinerant workers, particularly the lack of continuity of care. Their extensive travel abroad has further shaped their perspective, having witnessed healthcare systems that prioritize accessibility, affordability, and positive outcomes. These experiences fuel Magnolia’s dedication to creating radical and compassionate solutions that meet the real needs of our unique community.

Danielle Dupont

Vice President

Danielle Dupont has served on the board since RESCU’s second year. She has spent most of those years serving in leadership positions from Chairs of Communications, Fundraising and Programs to Vice President and currently serves as President, or Chair, of the board for the last 6 years. Danielle is the owner/producer of the troupe “The Washing Well Wenches”, which performs at over 30 festivals nationwide, and lives with her feathered son Hoogin, Odin’s Raven. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from University of South Florida’s Honors Program with a degree in Interdisciplinary Social Sciences and is proud to say that her offspring Samma Fagan also graduated from the same Honors College and is a librarian in Florida. Danielle can be found working with local women’s shelters around the country and cooking breakfast or hotdogs for her Ren-Faire community. She enjoys museums, travel, board games, and all things water!

Linda

Ballard

Secretary

Linda joined the Board of RESCU in 2011 after serving as cashier and co-bursar at rallies for a few years at the SoCal Renaissance Faire with Linda Sutherland. She became Secretary soon afterwards and has performed multiple functions both on the board and at the SoCal Faire.

Linda was born and raised in the Finger Lakes in Seneca Falls, NY, where she embraced the history of the Women’s Rights movement. She lived for three years in her early teens in Lubbock, TX, where she learned to tolerate dust storms and tornadoes and joined the drama club. Soon afterwards she returned to Seneca Falls, where she was editor-in-chief of her high school yearbook.

Linda’s first degree was in Journalism at SUNY. After graduation, she worked as a photographer and proofreader for the Finger Lakes Times in Geneva, NY. In a few years, she decided to pursue another path and moved to San Francisco, California, to work in technical publications for the Navy. She subsequently earned a degree in Pharmacology and Biological Chemistry at the University of California, Santa Barbara. She soon joined CalTech to help in the development of novel automated gene sequencing methodology in Leroy Hood’s lab. She then moved on to Howard Hughes Medical Institute at UCLA in 1990 and ran a neurodevelopmental research lab until her retirement.

At the SoCal Faire, Linda is the Director of Kids’ Kingdom. She directs children’s plays and has a dedicated troupe of crafters and gamemasters who teach children their skills.

With her husband Bruce, Linda enjoys culinary pursuits, hiking, embroidery, and most especially Buffalo Bills football. She enthusiastically represents RESCU in all aspects of her life, most especially at the SoCal Renaissance Faire, and is always available to participants to answer questions and offer help.

Travis Hesson

Fundraising Co-Chair

Travis serves as Director of Technology for a global nonprofit organization. Within the Renaissance community, Travis has worked alongside entertainers and booth vendors alike at various festivals and fairs, but Ohio Renaissance Festival in Waynesville, OH is where he calls home.

Travis found his way into RESCU through an invitation to attend the Bristol RESCU Rally in 2017. The event and its cause was immediately a draw for Travis and his wife; RESCU presented a way to support the Health of the Company and get involved in the beautiful Renaissance participant community. Over the years, Travis has donated, volunteered, and led various RESCU events and wildly enjoys spreading the word of RESCU and other causes he serves!

Cassie Townsend

Fundraising Co-Chair

Cassie began volunteering with the RESCU Foundation in 2018, assisting with Programs via Monday morning tables, and quickly stepped into a leadership role as Co-Chair of Fundraising in 2022 when she joined the Board of Directors. Her giving and loving spirit is passionate about supporting the medical wellbeing of the community that she has chosen to be part of since 2002.

A self-described Jackette of all trades, she has performed nationally on stage, been in movies, produced video games, served at food booths, had her own podcast, and organized data for a home healthcare company among many other jobs. Cassie and her partner travel nationally with her special cat Kismet.

Brian O’Leary

Data/Tech Chair

Brian O’Leary began with RESCU in 2011 as a volunteer for the RESCU Rally at Sherwood Forest Faire, where he is now on the management team. He joined the RESCU Board two years later and has held various roles including Communications Chair, Aid Panelist, Checkwriter, Data/Tech Officer, and Treasurer.

Originally from Boston, MA, Brian has a rich history of community service, with previous volunteer work at an elementary school, orphanage, arts organizations, hospitals, the SPCA, and with indigents living with HIV/AIDS. He has also worked with Americorps, handling roles from storytelling and volunteer coordination to transporting bone marrow and organizing fundraising galas.

Currently, Brian focuses on his family (husband and three teenagers), their businesses (including Sherwood Forest Faire), and RESCU Foundation. He finds great fulfillment in supporting the renaissance faire community and enjoys traveling, reading, cooking, online gaming, and adding a touch of fun to any situation.

Anne Regan

Communications Chair

Anne joined the RESCU Foundation as a volunteer in 2023, supporting social media and communications before stepping into a leadership role as Chair of Communications in 2024. A lifelong storyteller and community builder, she brings a passion for connecting people with meaningful causes and with one another.

Her connection to Renaissance festivals spans more than 30 years and nearly every perspective imaginable. Anne first attended as a middle-school patron and over the decades has taken on many roles within the festival world — including performer, vendor, and member of festival management. This broad experience has given her a deep appreciation for the creativity, resilience, and sense of family that define the Renaissance festival community.

Alongside her festival involvement, Anne has built a career in communications, media, and public storytelling, with experience ranging from broadcasting and journalism to marketing and public relations. She has also supported community arts organizations and public service initiatives, using her communications skills to help organizations share their stories and expand their impact.

Anne’s commitment to healthcare access is deeply personal. Raised in a family of healthcare workers and the parent of a child with type 1 diabetes, she understands the vital importance of accessible medical care for individuals and families. These experiences continue to guide her advocacy and volunteer work with the RESCU Foundation.

Anne shares her life with three children, three grandchildren, and five beloved fur babies.

Gayle French

Staff Liaison

Gayle French has been an integral part of the RESCU Foundation since 2010, serving in multiple leadership roles, including president, vice president, and secretary. Gayle cherishes her life with her husband, Ryan, and their four cats. She treasures every opportunity to spend time with her daughter and never misses a chance to get in the water whenever possible!

Marney Cullen

Compliance Chair

Marney Cullen is the Chair of RESCU’s Staff/Compliance/Aide Panel (SCA) Committee and serves on two other committees and Aid Panel.

An accomplished classical and Celtic musician and vocalist, Marney made the jump from playing in symphonies and quartets to travelling and working Renaissance and Celtic festivals as a musician, storyteller and merchant in the early 1980’s. Presently rooted in the Midwest, Marney and her husband John currently manage the Renboots shoppe at the St. Louis Renaissance Faire, provide oversight for their family shoppes Blossoms & Bouquets and Love is Mehndi Henna.

Marney holds the professional position of Senior Paralegal for a boutique labor and employment firm located in St. Louis, Missouri. She holds the national credential of Certified Paralegal, with several decades of experience in the legal industry. In addition to working for the law firm,

Marney provides private educational advocacy services for students with invisible and trauma-based disabilities, and doula and midwifery support for clients both in and out of the hospital setting.

Along with her musical endeavors, Marney feeds her creative side through various mixed media and fiber arts, working with John in their garden and beehives, joining in the hijinks of her five children and several grandchildren, and helping her husband run herd on a variety of spoiled rotten furry and feathered livestock on the farm.

Lauren Berry

Board Member

Lauren joined the RESCU Board of Directors in spring 2025 after interning with the Aid Panel, bringing more than a decade of medical coding and billing experience to strengthen her passion for patient advocacy. A graduate of the University of Michigan (BFA, Cum Laude in metalworking and jewelry design), she also discovered Irish dance during her studies—a path that led her to her husband and, eventually, to performing as Céilidh Shillelagh with the Celtic band Pictus. Since 2012, she has toured Renaissance festivals and Highland games nationwide as a drummer, bringing thunderous energy to audiences while staying rooted in the festival community she loves.

Offstage, Lauren works as a Certified Medical Coder and Physician Educator with a major Michigan hospital network. As a “rooted rennie,” she knows how fortunate she is to have consistent access to healthcare—something often out of reach for traveling performers. Through RESCU, she hopes to use her professional expertise and negotiation skills to ease the burden of medical bills and improve access to quality care, breaking down barriers so her faire family can focus on healing.

Amanda Renaud

Programs Chair

Amanda joined the RESCU Board in 2024 and is currently the Chair of Programs. Serving RESCU allows her to give back to the festival community in a tangible way and support the humans within it who cultivate much-needed whimsy for the world at large.

Amanda fell under the spell of renaissance magic over thirty years ago and proceeded to immerse herself by working games, booths, food, site crew, street cast, fight troupe, and as stage performer. Since 2012, she has toured full-time as co-creator of Topsy Turvy Show, a female circus duo whose shenanigans (not-so) subtly advocate for inclusivity and body positivity. Outside of the ren-iverse, she holds a Master of Arts in Teaching specializing in mathematics and exceptional student education. Whether as performer, teacher, or RESCU-er, she quests to compassionately empower people to affect the world around them, to actively sculpt their reality – one hula hooping headstand, algebraic aha moment, or accessible health resource at a time.
